Sony, Matsushita reveals high-capacity format of new archives

If you have been waiting for the next physical media after Blu-ray, perhaps this will allow 4k video to become mainstream and continue to wait. As its name suggests, the new archive disc is actually a high-capacity disc for long-term storage. Although the archive CD format will start with 300GB, both Sony and Panasonic will speed up the plan, gradually reaching 500GB, and finally reaching a capacity of 1TB.

The current Blu-ray disc store is 50GB. The archive CD will be written once, with three write layers per side and two sided media. The two companies quickly explained that the Archives CD is a solution for professional storage, not for general users. Panasonic spokesperson said: "The CD-ROM archives have been developed for professional use and are not currently being considered for home use." This CD-ROM is expected to be available early next year.
