House fire in Sycamore, 10-26-16

Check out the attached photos from the Daily Chronicle. It's a story about the "Collyers Mansion" fire that happened on October 26, 2016. It was a general alarm with a lot of work from the exterior due to the poor interior conditions. Only three people could be on the second floor at a time. All things considered, it was a good response.

Here are some excerpts from the Daily-Chronicle.com article and other sources:

Firefighters were called to 974 W. State St. in Sycamore on Wednesday evening after a neighbor reported seeing smoke. Upon arrival, crews saw smoke coming from the attic of the two-story home, according to Sycamore Fire Chief Pete Polarek. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control within about 30 minutes.

The residents were already outside when the firefighters arrived. No one was injured. The fire caused approximately $40,000 in damages to the home.

Homeowner Larry Smith, 61, who lived there with his wife and son, mentioned that they had been remodeling the house. Two weeks prior, they had finished the roof and installed new windows. He wasn’t sure what caused the fire, which appeared to have started in the area of a second-floor bedroom and hallway. He also didn’t know where the family would stay that night. The damage from the fire, along with smoke and water, made the home uninhabitable.

No injuries were reported, and the Sycamore Fire Department received assistance from crews in DeKalb, Cortland, Hinckley, and Genoa.

These images give a visual sense of the scene and the efforts made by the firefighters. It’s always interesting to see how quickly the community responds in such situations. The fact that no one was hurt is a relief, but the damage to the home must have been devastating for the family. It’s a reminder of how important fire safety and proper maintenance can be, especially during major renovation projects. The collaboration between different fire departments also highlights the importance of teamwork in emergency responses.
