A nyloc nut, also known as a nylon insert lock nut or polymer insert lock nut, is a type of locking nut that uses a nylon collar to prevent loosening. These nuts are often referred to as "nylok" or "nylock." The nylon insert is positioned at the end of the nut and has an inner diameter slightly smaller than the major diameter of the screw. When tightened, the insert deforms elastically over the screw threads, creating a compressive force that locks the nut in place. Nyloc nuts maintain their locking ability up to 250°F (121°C).
There is some debate about whether nyloc nuts can be reused. Some sources suggest they can be used multiple times without damage, while others recommend replacement in critical applications. For example, the Federal Aviation Administration allows reuse if the prevailing torque is within specification, but certain military guidelines require replacement in high-stakes environments.
