Itasca Fire Protection District news
Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:
The Itasca Fire Protection District is seeking voter approval for an additional $1 million in property taxes to cover rising operational costs, including salaries, benefits, and facility maintenance. The funding request will be on the ballot for the April 4 election.
"This referendum isn't about hiring more staff or building a new station," said Fire Chief James F. Burke Jr. "It's simply to keep our current level of service running smoothly and ensure we can pay our bills going forward."
The district, which serves most of Itasca and parts of Addison and Wood Dale, relies almost entirely on property taxes for revenue. However, the $4.4 million it collects each year falls short of covering its expenses.
For several years now, the district has faced a budget shortfall, and officials have made cost-cutting measures to manage the gap. But with the deficit expected to grow, they are running out of ways to balance the books.
One possible consequence could be staff reductions. Currently, the department employs 22 firefighter/paramedics, along with a chief, deputy chief, two office staff members, and a fire prevention director who receives partial support from the village.
The district often operates with a minimum of five employees on duty, typically staffing one engine crew of three and one ambulance team of two. This limited staffing can make it challenging to respond to emergencies efficiently.
If the ballot measure passes, annual property tax revenue would increase from approximately $4.46 million to $5.47 million, including funds for pension obligations. Homeowners with a $200,000 property value could expect an estimated $130 increase in their annual property tax bill.
Burke also mentioned that the additional funds could help address long-overdue capital improvements, such as replacing aging vehicles and repairing the 46-year-old fire station at 520 W. Irving Park Road. While the referendum is focused on daily operations, the extra money could provide much-needed relief for infrastructure and equipment needs.
