Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 8-21-13

Here's a report from Drew Gresik:

I was at the Still and Box station located at 2324 S. California Avenue. The fire was in a vacant, two-and-a-half-story wood-frame building. The incident was transitioned to a defensive operation around the time these photos were taken. Tower 5 was positioned in Sector 1, while Squad 1â€™s snorkel unit was operating a master stream in Sector 2. From what I could tell, the fire was in the attic or second floor. I didnâ€™t see any visible flames, but there was a heavy amount of smoke coming from the structure. Here are some images from the scene.

The photos give a good sense of the situation on the ground. It was clear that the crews were working hard to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. The heavy smoke made visibility difficult, and it's easy to see why they went defensive. Iâ€™ll be keeping an eye on updates from the department for more details.
