The story of Massey Ferguson begins in 1847 when Daniel Massey established the Newcastle Foundry and Machine Manufactory in Clarington, Ontario. This early venture eventually evolved into Massey Manufacturing Co., known for pioneering mechanical threshers. In 1891, it merged with A. Harris, Son and Company to form Massey-Harris Limited, becoming one of the largest farm equipment manufacturers globally.

By the early 20th century, Massey-Harris expanded its product range to include reapers, threshers, and even safety bicycles. In 1910, it made its first international acquisition by purchasing the Johnston Harvester Company in New York.

Innovations in Farm Equipment

In 1930, Massey-Harris introduced its first tractor, the 20-horsepower GP 15/22. Over the years, the company continued to innovate, launching models like the Pacemaker in 1936 and the Model 101 in 1938. Massey-Harris was also among the first to develop a four-wheel drive tractor.

One of the most significant innovations came in 1938 when engineer Tom Carroll designed the first self-propelled combine, the Massey-Harris Number 20. Though not mass-produced at the time, this invention laid the foundation for future models such as the Number 21 in 1940.
