New fire chief in Carol Stream

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

The Carol Stream Fire Protection District board has approved the promotion of Deputy Chief Bob Hoff to the position of Fire Chief, following a vote on Monday night. The board is expected to formally sign Hoff’s three-year contract at their meeting on July 11. While the exact terms, including his salary, are still being finalized, the decision marks a significant step for the department.

Hoff will now lead a fire district that includes three stations and approximately 60 sworn personnel. He joined the department in 2012, just weeks after stepping down as the head of the second-largest fire department in the country. At the time, he had intended to focus more on family life, but accepted the role of deputy under his long-time colleague, former Chief Rick Kolomay.

"The pace here was already set when I arrived, and we're going to keep it up," Hoff said shortly after the announcement. "The pride and professionalism this team has—it's like what I experienced in the city. I love the fire service. It's my whole life, other than my family."

His family has a deep connection to the profession. Four generations of firefighters, including his son, have served in the field. Hoff often speaks about the legacy of his father, Thomas, a Chicago Fire Department battalion chief who died in the line of duty during a blaze on Valentine's Day in 1962. Hoff was only five years old at the time.

In his office, Hoff keeps a framed photo of his father and mother, Eleanor, who passed away eight years later. A message beneath the image reads: “To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.”

Perry Johnson, a 38-year veteran of the district and the other finalist for the chief position, transitioned into a newly created civilian role as Chief Administrative Officer. Since Chief Kolomay underwent shoulder surgery, took paid leave, and officially retired on June 1, Hoff and Johnson have been managing daily operations together.

The two have also worked closely on contract negotiations with the firefighters’ union. Hoff mentioned that pay raises remain a key issue, with both sides aiming to align firefighter salaries with those of neighboring departments. A federal mediator is expected to join the talks later this month.
