The new naming system for commercial vehicle engines in China has become increasingly complex, with major manufacturers rebranding their engine models to capture market share. This shift has created confusion among industry professionals and consumers alike, as the new names often lack clear indicators of performance or specifications. For example, it's challenging to determine the number of cylinders, bore size, displacement, or power output just by looking at a model name. This ambiguity complicates not only technical analysis but also business decisions, such as predicting accessory sales based on engine model performance.
Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Factory has made significant strides in expanding its engine lineup. Previously, the factory had limited capacity for high-power engines, but with the growing demand in the commercial vehicle sector, its production and market presence have grown substantially. The plant now offers a wide range of engines, from 2L to 11L, covering both diesel and natural gas options. Its annual production capacity exceeds 200,000 units, and its engines provide power ranging from 90 kW to 300 kW, meeting national III standards and some even reaching IV levels.
One of Dongfeng’s flagship models is the DCI11 diesel engine, developed using Renault technology and tailored for the Chinese market. It features low fuel consumption (190g/kWh), a long service life (up to 800,000 km), and meets national IV emission standards. This engine is widely used in high-performance trucks like the Dongfeng Tianlong and has gained strong market recognition.
In addition to diesel, Dongfeng has also focused on natural gas engines, developing a range of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient models. These are commonly used in city buses, garbage trucks, and other urban applications. Dongfeng has also participated in national projects to develop electronically controlled CNG and LNG engines, achieving good dynamic performance and meeting strict emissions requirements.
Another notable engine is the EQ4H, which features a high-pressure common rail system, four valves per cylinder, and a supercharged air intake system. It delivers power between 104 kW and 147 kW and complies with national III and IV emission standards.
North China Diesel Engine Co., Ltd., known for importing Deutz technology, produces a range of V-shaped engines that are popular in large trucks and luxury buses. Huachai, another key player, has introduced high-displacement engines like the BF6M1075C and TCD2015V06, which offer high torque and improved reliability.
FAW Jiefang’s engine series includes several platforms such as W, X, K, F, L, and N, offering power ranges from 46 kW to 310 kW. Their L series is designed for noise reduction and smooth operation, while the CA6DN series is known for its advanced cooling and structural design.
Weichai, one of China’s largest engine manufacturers, has two main product lines: truck and passenger car engines. The WD615 and WP series are particularly popular, with the latter being highly sought after due to its reliability and performance. Weichai has also launched the N series, which improves fuel efficiency and reliability through optimized design.
Yuchai, the most comprehensive diesel engine manufacturer in China, offers engines that meet national IV and V emission standards. Its YC6L series is widely used in Beijing’s public transport, and it has developed specialized engines for different applications, such as buses, highway passenger cars, and trucks, each tailored to specific performance and comfort requirements.
Overall, the evolution of engine naming and classification reflects the rapid development of the commercial vehicle industry in China. As manufacturers continue to innovate and expand their product lines, the need for clearer and more informative naming conventions becomes increasingly important for both industry professionals and end-users.
