In recent years, as major commercial vehicle engine manufacturers in China have aggressively introduced new engines to compete for market share, they have frequently rebranded and reclassified their engine models. This approach has created a complex and often confusing naming system that differs significantly from traditional industry standards such as bore size or displacement, which were once used to identify engine performance. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult for both consumers and industry professionals to understand the technical specifications and performance characteristics of these engines. This lack of clarity also makes it challenging for companies to estimate accessory sales and track market trends based on engine model performance. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of each manufacturer’s new engine series—particularly the key parameters like cylinder count, bore diameter, displacement, and power—has become essential for industry insiders.
Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Factory has developed a wide range of engine models, covering displacements from 2L to 11L. The factory is known for its high-performance diesel and natural gas engines, with an annual production capacity exceeding 200,000 units. Its engines meet national III emission standards, with some models even reaching the IV level. Among its popular models is the DCI11 diesel engine, which was developed based on Renault technology and tailored for the Chinese market. It features low fuel consumption (190g/kWh), long lifespan (up to 800,000 km), and meets national IV emissions. The DCI11 is widely used in Dongfeng Tianlong trucks and has gained strong market recognition.
In addition, Dongfeng has also developed a series of natural gas engines, including the EQDN series, which are used in city buses, trucks, and sanitation vehicles. These engines are designed to be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, meeting national III and above emission standards. They have been continuously improved over the years, with the latest models capable of meeting IV and even higher emission requirements.
Another notable model is the EQ4H diesel engine, featuring electronically controlled high-pressure common rail technology, four valves per cylinder, and a supercharged air-cooled intake system. It covers a power range of 104–147 kW and meets national III and IV emission standards.
North China Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. specializes in German Deutz engines, offering models with V-shaped structures. Many large trucks, luxury buses, and tractors from brands like Mercedes-Benz and Shaanxi Auto use these engines. Huachai, another major player, has introduced high-displacement and high-power models, such as the BF6M1075C, which features internal oil and water channels to reduce external piping and improve reliability.
FAW Jiefang's Wuxi Diesel Engine Factory offers a diverse range of engines, including truck, bus, construction, and agricultural models. The L series is known for its smooth operation and noise reduction, while the N series offers high power and reliability. The CA6DN series, jointly developed with FAW Technology Center, features advanced cooling and structural design to meet high heat load and pressure demands.
Weichai, one of China's largest engine manufacturers, has two main series: truck and passenger car engines. Their WD615 and WP series are well-known for their performance and reliability. The newly launched N series has improved efficiency, power, and reliability, making it a popular choice in the market.
Yuchai is recognized as one of the most complete and widely used diesel engine manufacturers in China. It has developed the YC6L series, meeting national IV and V emission standards. Its engines are used in various applications, from buses to trucks, and are tailored for different market needs. For example, bus engines prioritize fuel economy, while highway passenger car engines focus on comfort and power. Yuchai also customizes its engines based on specific market requirements, optimizing for either high-speed performance or low-speed torque.
