The Critical Role of Manhole Maintenance
Manholes may not be the most noticeable part of our urban infrastructure, but they play a vital role in keeping our cities running smoothly. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. has about 20 million manholes—roughly one every 400 feet of pavement. These structures are more than just access points; they provide entry to essential utility systems like sewage, water, electricity, and gas. Proper maintenance of manholes is crucial for public safety and the long-term health of our infrastructure. Unfortunately, many manholes are neglected during routine sewer system inspections, leading to serious issues over time. It's estimated that 20% of manholes are between 30 and 50 years old, with over 3 million in such poor condition that they require urgent repair or replacement. This neglect can lead to structural failures, environmental hazards, and costly repairs down the line. In Pima County, Arizona, 21 manholes built in the 1940s had previously been repaired using a cementitious liner, which eventually failed. As the liner deteriorated, it lost adhesion and began breaking off into the sewage stream, causing damage to the processing system. The county needed a reliable solution that would restore the manholes without requiring full replacement. HJ3’s carbon fiber system provided an effective and cost-efficient alternative. Instead of replacing all 21 manholes, the team removed the failed liner, ground the surface, and resurfaced the concrete with Quick-Set grout. Cracks were sealed with a low-viscosity polymer, and CarbonSeal™ carbon fiber was applied to reinforce the structure. A vinyl ester topcoat was then added to protect against Hydrogen Sulfide gas, a common cause of corrosion in sewer systems. This approach saved the county around 80% in costs compared to full replacement. Additionally, the project was completed without road closures, saving months of disruption and preventing nearly 62,000 gallons of water from being wasted during the production of new manholes. Proper manhole maintenance isn’t just about fixing problems—it’s about preventing them before they become major issues. By investing in durable, long-lasting solutions, communities can ensure safer, more efficient infrastructure for years to come.Sheet Metal Fabrication,Ss Steel Plate,Metal Chequered Plate,Patterned Plate Sheet Metal
