DSM Opens Engineering Plastics Center in Japan

Singapore - DSM Engineering Plastics has established a new technology center in Yokohama, Japan. The company said that the reason why it decided to invest in Japan was because of the importance of Japanese customers.

The company’s spokeswoman Mirelle van der Kreeft said that DSM entered the Japanese market for 15 years and its Japanese customers are leaders in the automotive and electronics industries.

She told reporters: "The Japanese market may not be able to grow rapidly, but the market in which the Japanese customers are located is huge and growing. For example, nearly 30% of the cars in the world are manufactured by Japanese OEMs."

Many of DSM's customers have headquarters in Japan, she added: "The headquarters is responsible for determining product design and deciding material selection."

The new center will focus on the development of engineering plastics for automotive, electrical, electronics and food packaging applications. Its product line includes DSM's Stanyl, FoTii, EcoPaxx, Akulon and Arnitel materials.

Its equipped test equipment covers injection molding, physical property testing, and thermal analysis and chemical analysis.

DSM has not announced the amount of this investment or the potential production capacity of the center, but DSM said that the center is sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, and it is a targeted industry subsidy program for the promotion of Japan's Asian network projects and Yokohama City.
