Yesterday, I witnessed a fire in Chicago that broke out on December 13, 2011, at an apartment building located at 4018 W. Cermak Road. The incident unfolded rapidly, and I managed to capture several images, along with some details about what happened.
Engine 38 was the first unit to arrive on the scene, quickly identifying a two-story brick apartment building engulfed in flames. Measuring 25 feet by 60 feet, the structure appeared vacant at the time. As Truck 32, the second truck company to respond, arrived, firefighters noticed severe fire involvement at the rear of the building. Upon assessing the situation, the battalion commander immediately called for additional resources, escalating the response to a full box alarm. Three fire lines were deployed to combat the blaze effectively. Authorities later confirmed that the fire had suspicious origins, prompting the Office of Fire Investigations to be summoned to the site.
Attached are my photos capturing different aspects of the firefighting efforts. In one image, you can see firefighters from Engine 109 pulling a hose line into action. Another shot highlights Truck 48 positioning its ladder at the front of the building to assist in containing the flames. A third photograph reveals intense fire activity visible at the rear of the structure, emphasizing the severity of the situation. Finally, there’s a picture of Squad 2 utilizing backup equipment to support the ongoing operations.
This event left a lasting impression on me as it underscored both the bravery of our firefighters and the unpredictable nature of fires. It's always crucial to remain vigilant and prepared, especially given how quickly such incidents can escalate. I hope these images provide insight into the dedication and skill required during emergencies like this one.
