Flossmoor currently operates with three engines, each expected to last 20 years. Under the new plan, they'll transition to maintaining just two operational engines at any given time. This change means that each engine will now be replaced after 10 years instead of 20, aligning Flossmoor's schedule more closely with Park Forest's current practices.
When one of the villages retires an engine, the older model will be placed into reserve status for five years. During this period, it can serve as backup whenever the primary engines require routine servicing or repairs. Both communities will always retain two frontline engines to ensure timely responses to emergencies. This setup also ensures compliance with NFPA guidelines, which stipulate a minimum of 20 years of frontline service followed by an additional five years in reserve.
Both Flossmoor and Park Forest must adhere to specific pumping requirements set by the ISO, which mandates a capacity of 3,500 gallons per minute. To meet these demands, they've kept their fleet robust enough to handle such high-output needs. Sewell noted that the similarities between the two towns made this collaboration feasible. For instance, their road layouts and firefighting equipment needs are quite comparable. Additionally, Park Forest shares Flossmoor’s approach to managing a Capital Replacement Fund, which helps finance long-term replacements for critical municipal assets like vehicles and machinery. Their joint participation in IRMA, a regional risk management agency, further strengthens their ability to sustain this partnership. Discontinuing IRMA membership could jeopardize the agreement, as Sewell pointed out.
Interestingly, Flossmoor already collaborates with neighboring Homewood and Hazel Crest on emergency medical services through a shared ambulance program. This latest initiative highlights how smaller municipalities can leverage partnerships to maximize efficiency without compromising safety standards.
