Yesterday afternoon, on December 13, 2011, firefighters from the 14th Battalion were dispatched to a still alarm at 4018 West Cermak Road. Engine 38 was the first unit to arrive on the scene and found themselves facing a fire in a two-story brick apartment building measuring 25 feet by 60 feet. As Truck 32, the second-due ladder company, pulled up, they quickly identified heavy involvement of the rear portion of the structure. Their captain immediately reported back to Battalion Chief 14 and requested a box alarm due to the severity of the situation.
The firefighters worked swiftly to bring the blaze under control using three separate lines. According to initial reports, the building was reportedly unoccupied at the time, raising suspicions about the cause of the fire. The Office of Fire Investigations was soon on-site to determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
Attached are several photos taken by Hank Sajovic, offering a detailed look at the efforts made by the Chicago Fire Department to extinguish the flames. In one image, firefighters can be seen pulling a hose off Engine 109, demonstrating their immediate response. Another shot highlights Truck 48 scaling the front of the building, showcasing the teamwork required during such emergencies. A third photo captures the intense fire raging in the rear of the structure, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Lastly, an additional image shows Squad 2 utilizing backup equipment, highlighting the department’s preparedness even in challenging scenarios.
