Truck collision on US 41 3-8-12 (update)

Yesterday afternoon, I happened to witness a pretty serious semi-truck collision near Lake Bluff. The accident occurred around noon on Route 41, just north of Highway 176. It seems like two fast-moving semis were heading north when they encountered a slower-moving semi that was stuck behind a dump truck making a turn. The first semi managed to swerve into the inside lane and pass the slower truck safely, but unfortunately, the second semi didn’t notice the stuck vehicle in time and ended up crashing into its left rear side. The impact was severe enough to trap the driver of the impacted semi inside the cab. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene. Lake Bluff and Knollwood responded, along with Lake Forest’s ambulance team. North Chicago sent an engine, while Great Lakes brought out their trucking rescue unit. Libertyville also assisted by sending support to Knollwood station. After nearly an hour of intensive efforts, firefighters finally managed to free the trapped driver, who was then transported to Lake Forest Hospital. Thankfully, the other driver involved in the crash escaped without any injuries. As someone who was there at the time, I can tell you it was quite a chaotic scene. There were multiple emergency vehicles on-site, including several units from Ernie’s Wrecker Service working hard to clear the wreckage. The Lake Bluff Fire Department even brought out one of their brush units to assist. It took quite some effort to stabilize the situation and ensure everyone’s safety. Looking back at the aftermath, the damage to the affected semi was significant. Photos taken by Jeff Rudolph show the extent of the destruction, particularly focusing on the cab area where the driver had been trapped. Once freed, the truck was eventually towed away by one of Ernie’s heavy-duty wreckers. Overall, despite the severity of the incident, the quick response of emergency personnel helped prevent any worse outcomes, and I’m glad to hear that the injured driver received prompt medical attention.
