Vintage 5-11 +1 Special in Chicago, 10-10-71

I just received these amazing photos from Eric Haak. They were taken during a 5-11 special call on October 10, 1971. The fire started around 11:15 AM at 430 North Damen. From what I can gather, it looked like a building fire involving some kind of storage area, maybe filled with pallets or lumber. The last image shows Engine 14 responding to the scene, which is such a classic shot of vintage Chicago Fire Department equipment. It’s incredible how detailed and crisp these photos still look after all these years. Check out this first photo — you can see the flames really starting to take hold. It's fascinating to see how they managed these situations back then. And here’s another one that gives you a better view of the location. Notice the old-school apparatus and uniforms; it’s like stepping back in time. This next image captures the intensity of the firefighters working hard to control the blaze. It’s such a powerful moment. And this one shows the teamwork between the different units as they work together to get the situation under control. In this one, you can see Engine 14 parked nearby, ready to assist. It’s always interesting to see the logistics of firefighting operations even decades later. And finally, here’s a closer look at Engine 14 itself. Look at those details — the classic design and markings are just fantastic. All of these photos are from Eric Haak’s impressive collection, and the photographer remains unidentified. But whoever took them had an eye for detail and captured some truly historic moments. It’s amazing to think about the stories behind these images and the bravery of the firefighters who responded to this call. I’m so grateful to Eric for sharing these with us. They’re a great reminder of both the challenges faced by firefighters in the past and the timeless nature of their service.
