Last night, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters responded to a house fire at 20538 N. Clarice Avenue, located in unincorporated Lake County, close to Buffalo Grove. As they headed to the scene, the call was escalated to a Code 4 for an active fire. It was bitterly cold, with temperatures hovering around 12 degrees Fahrenheit, and a steady, wind-driven snowstorm was battering the area as the first responders arrived. The two-story house was completely engulfed in flames, and the couple who lived there was found outside.
The husband was quickly taken to a nearby hospital by Lincolnshire paramedics, reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation. Unfortunately, the nearest hydrant was frozen solid, which complicated firefighting efforts. The alarm was then upgraded to a Box Alarm as various units scrambled to set up water lines and prepare Lincolnshire Truck 53 for master stream operations.
Both Lincolnshire engines were actively pumping water, and Truck 53 was also involved in the operation. Mutual aid and auto-aid support arrived from neighboring departments including Long Grove, Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Palatine, Northfield, and Grayslake. Their assistance was crucial in managing the intense blaze.
I managed to capture some images of the incident. These photos were taken by my neighbor, Sally Miller, and later, after the roof had collapsed, by Larry Shapiro who arrived shortly thereafter. The intensity of the fire is evident in these images, showcasing how rapidly it spread through the structure.
