The Glenview Fire Department responded to a call about smoke in an unincorporated area of Cook County at 3521 Central Road just before 10 p.m. Shortly after, additional reports came in indicating a fire on the third floor of a three-story apartment building, with concerns that a resident on the balcony might attempt to jump. Glenview Engine 7 was the first unit to arrive and found heavy flames coming from the third-floor unit, along with a frantic tenant on the balcony. The incident was escalated to a box alarm as more resources were needed.
As firefighters prepared for a possible rescue, they quickly urged the resident not to jump. In a tense moment, the occupant managed to climb to the adjacent balcony and then dropped down one floor while firefighters positioned a ground ladder below. The resident was safely rescued without any injuries.
The fire was quickly brought under control, though it extended slightly into the neighboring unit. Three Glenview engines were actively pumping water at the scene, and Truck 14 had its main line stretched to the roof. Several mutual aid units joined the effort, including Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1, Battalion 1, Niles Engine, Ambulance, Battalion 2, Morton Grove Engine 5 and Squad 4, Northbrook Truck 12, Wilmette Tower 26, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14.
Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene but both reached it after the fire had been extinguished. Some photos from the event have been shared online, capturing key moments of the response.
Larry Shapiro took several images, including one showing Glenview Engine 6 connected to a hydrant west of the fire building. Another photo captured firefighters working on the balcony and mansard roof, while a third showed crews overhauling the structure from the roof. Additional shots depicted firefighters wetting down void spaces above the adjacent unit, and another image highlighted Glenview Engine 13 supplying water to Engine 7 near the fire location. These images provide a visual account of the intense firefighting efforts and the coordination between local and mutual aid departments.
