Glenview Box Alarm 11-3-12

The Glenview Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in an unincorporated area of Cook County at 3521 Central Road just before 10 p.m. Witnesses later called in, reporting a fire on the third floor of a three-story apartment building and that a resident was on the balcony, possibly considering jumping. Glenview Engine 7 arrived first and found heavy flames coming from the third-floor unit, with a tenant in distress on the balcony. The incident was immediately upgraded to a box alarm. As firefighters prepared for a possible rescue, they calmly urged the occupant not to jump. In a quick move, the resident managed to climb to the adjacent balcony and then dropped down one floor as a ground ladder was positioned. Firefighters were able to assist the individual safely, preventing a potential tragedy. The fire was quickly brought under control, though it spread slightly into a neighboring unit. Three Glenview engines were pumping water at the scene, while Truck 14 had its main line extended to the roof. Several mutual aid companies responded, including Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1, Battalion 1, Niles Engine, Ambulance, Battalion 2, Morton Grove Engine 5 and Squad 4, Northbrook Truck 12, Wilmette Tower 26, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene but both reached it after the fire had been extinguished. Some photos from the event have since been shared online, offering a glimpse into the firefighting efforts.
