Of Interest … College of Lake County
Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:
The College of Lake County (CLC) stands out as the only community college in Illinois offering an associate degree in Firefighter Basic Operations that includes a hands-on internship with a local fire department. Since the program launched in August 2016, students have consistently praised the real-world experience it provides, calling it one of the most valuable parts of their education.
Of the 10 students who have completed a two-semester unpaid internship with the Grayslake Fire Protection District, three have been hired as part-time firefighters by the district itself. Another four have found positions with other local departments, and one student is now working as a wildland firefighter in Oregon. This success rate highlights the effectiveness of the program in preparing students for real careers in emergency services.
A key advantage of CLC’s program is that graduates not only earn an A.A.S. degree but also become eligible for Fire Basic Operations certification through the Illinois State Fire Marshal. In addition, they receive emergency medical technician (EMT) licensure from the Illinois Department of Public Health. These credentials make CLC graduates highly competitive in the job market.
The internship program was developed through an intergovernmental agreement between CLC and Grayslake Fire Protection District officials. Both faculty members and fire department leaders work together to select candidates, provide training, and evaluate student performance throughout the internship. This collaboration ensures that students are well-prepared for the demands of the profession.
Chief John Christian of the Grayslake Fire Protection District commented, “CLC students come in ready to learn and contribute. They understand our equipment, procedures, and policies. We’re proud to partner with CLC and see so many of their students go on to successful careers.†The Grayslake Fire Protection District serves over 37,000 residents and responds to approximately 4,000 emergency calls annually.
For those interested in joining CLC’s fire science technology program, there are several steps and requirements to follow. Prospective students must first complete the Introduction to Fire Science course as a prerequisite. Additionally, they are expected to finish the degree within two years to stay on track with the program’s structured curriculum.
