The ionic liquid catalyzed ethylene carbonate project, led by the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has recently received positive evaluation from Gansu Province's scientific and technological appraisal committee. This initiative successfully addressed major technical challenges in the production of ethylene carbonate, including low reaction yields, inefficient use of raw materials, and difficulties in recycling the ionic liquid catalyst. The project not only advanced the efficient utilization of carbon dioxide emissions but also laid a solid foundation for the development of downstream products derived from ethylene carbonate.
A key achievement of the project is the development of the LZC-type complex ionic liquid catalyst, which demonstrates exceptional catalytic activity and high selectivity. Using less than 6 parts per million of this catalyst, the yield of ethylene carbonate can reach up to 98%, significantly improving the efficiency of the process. Furthermore, the team successfully designed and implemented a catalytic cycle process that enables effective catalyst recycling, reducing both material and energy consumption.
The ethylene carbonate produced through this technology meets national quality standards, with refined versions suitable for high-end applications in the electronics industry. This breakthrough marks a significant step forward in green chemistry and sustainable chemical production, offering a promising solution for industrial carbon capture and utilization. The project highlights the potential of ionic liquids as environmentally friendly and efficient catalysts in modern chemical processes.
GPPS Resin
Polystyrene is a synthetic polymer made from monomers of the aromatic hydrocarbon styrene. GPPS Resin can be solid or foamed. General-purpose polystyrene is clear, hard, and brittle. It is an inexpensive resin per unit weight. It is a poor barrier to oxygen and water vapour and has a relatively low melting point. Polystyrene is one of the most widely used plastics, the scale of its production being several million tonnes per year. Polystyrene can be naturally transparent, but can be colored with colorants. Uses include protective packaging, containers, lids, bottles, trays, tumblers, disposable cutlery, in the making of models, and as an alternative material for phonograph records.
