A new generation of green disinfectants is expected to hit the market soon. According to a report from the Langfang City Productivity Promotion Center, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a modified potassium ferrate production technology that will be used for the first time in commercial manufacturing. This innovation makes the production process more controllable, significantly improves product stability, and reduces its corrosiveness toward metals. As a result, it can now serve as a truly eco-friendly, broad-spectrum disinfectant and water purifier.
For years, chlorine-based disinfectants have dominated the market due to their strong disinfection properties, while aluminum-based coagulants have been widely used in water treatment because of their effective flocculation and turbidity removal. However, recent studies have raised concerns about the risks associated with chlorine-containing compounds, which are known to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic. Similarly, long-term use of aluminum-based agents may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.
Ferrate, particularly modified potassium ferrate, has emerged as a promising alternative due to its multifunctional, green, and efficient properties. However, its widespread application has been limited by challenges such as poor storage stability and difficulties in industrial-scale production. Up until now, high-purity ferrate was mostly confined to laboratory settings.
The breakthrough project by the Chinese Academy of Sciences introduced a step-by-step doping technique to produce modified potassium ferrate. This method suppresses unwanted side reactions, simplifies the industrial process, reduces alkali consumption, and enhances separation efficiency. It also eliminates the need for drying or using organic solvents, leading to improved safety and longer shelf life.
Experts believe that once this green disinfectant achieves full-scale production, it could capture a significant share of the Chinese market. Assuming an annual per capita usage of 0.1 kg, the national demand could reach 100,000 tons annually. With a production capacity of 10,000 tons per year and a selling price of 30,000 yuan per ton, the annual revenue could reach 300 million yuan, with profits and taxes amounting to around 100 million yuan.
Furthermore, test results show that modified potassium ferrate has versatile applications. It can be used for sanitizing fruits and vegetables, cleaning metal surfaces, disinfecting swimming pool water, controlling disease outbreaks in aquaculture, and decolorizing and reusing dyeing wastewater. Its wide range of uses makes it a highly attractive option for both environmental and public health sectors.
