Pickup trucks and SUVs typically experience higher wheel bearing loads compared to standard passenger cars. As a result, they require tapered roller bearings rather than the ball bearings used in regular vehicles. Tapered roller bearings provide greater load capacity and structural rigidity, which is essential for these types of vehicles. With the growing trend toward maintenance-free designs, there's an increasing demand for longer-lasting bearings. However, traditional improvements through material upgrades or heat treatment have reached their limits.
To address this challenge, NTN completely redesigned the internal structure of the bearing. By maximizing the external gear diameter and increasing the effective diameter of the retainer, the spacing between the rollers was significantly reduced—nearly to the point of contact. Additionally, the number of rollers was increased to its maximum possible limit, which helps distribute the load more evenly across each roller.
