Carburetor to speed up pump fault judgment

Many drivers have experienced this frustrating situation: after a normal day of driving, everything seems to be working fine. The next morning, when they try to start the car, it just won't turn over. They check the ignition system, clean the points, adjust the gap, but nothing helps. They observe the high-tension lead for each cylinder and confirm there's a spark. They check the oil level and the float chamber in the carburetor, which both look normal. Despite repeated attempts, the engine still refuses to start. They even replace the condenser and the ignition coil, but the problem remains. After a thorough inspection, it turns out the issue lies with the carburetor’s acceleration pump. Here’s how the diagnosis went: First, we checked if the throttle lever’s connecting rod (plunger) or the speed nut (diaphragm) was disconnected. Then, we removed the air filter and used a small cardboard stick inserted into the carburetor throat. While gently moving the throttle lever, we pulled out the stick. If the stick remained dry, that meant the acceleration pump wasn’t delivering fuel. Next, we removed the acceleration nozzle screw and used a thin copper wire to gently test the check valve. Then, we manually moved the throttle rod again. If no fuel came out, it indicated a damaged pump bowl or a blocked fuel passage. In some cases, the check valve might be worn or stuck, preventing proper fuel delivery. Replacing or cleaning the check valve usually resolves the issue. However, if the check valve is worn, it may not seal properly, leading to an overly rich fuel mixture. This not only increases fuel consumption but also makes the car harder to start, especially in the morning. It’s a common problem that many people overlook, but once identified, it can be fixed with a bit of patience and the right tools.
