Development of BPSM-I on-line particle size analyzer

The BPSM-I online particle size analyzer is an automated device designed to monitor critical parameters in the continuous production process of mineral processing. It finds wide application across non-ferrous metals, black metals, cement, chemical, and gold industries. This innovative instrument was approved as the fifteenth project under the Ministry of Science and Technology's subproject titled "Study on Process Monitoring Technology and Automatic Control System." The BPSM-I system consists of eight key components: a slurry steady flow box, an instrument control box, an electronic touch screen, a valve box, an air purification unit, a measuring head, a calibration sampler, and a support frame. The heart of the device is its nationally patented measuring head, which incorporates advanced technology for high precision and stability. The instrument control box houses a PLC programmable controller along with various functional modules, serving as the central command unit. The touch screen interface allows for user input, output, and seamless human-machine interaction. This device addresses several critical technological challenges, including the development of high-precision and stable measuring probes, overcoming difficulties in handling static and dynamic measurement contacts, ensuring accurate sensor selection and design, and implementing effective software algorithms for signal processing. Additionally, it features a sampling system that guarantees representative sample collection for reliable measurements. As a direct measurement type of slurry particle size testing equipment, the BPSM-I employs zero correction technology for water, automatically eliminating drift and wear-related errors. It is unaffected by changes in pulp viscosity, temperature, or concentration. The instrument also avoids interference from bubbles and flake minerals, without requiring degassing, demagnetization, or dilution. This ensures high accuracy, with a precision range of 1–2% and a particle size range of 600μm to 31μm (30–500 mesh). Users can optionally calibrate two levels for display and output, making it highly adaptable. The BPSM-I has achieved performance comparable to international standards. According to preliminary data from the Yongping Copper Mine, the annual grinding capacity increased by 6%, resulting in an estimated economic benefit of 8 million yuan after cost deductions. Currently, the Baotou Iron and Steel Group has signed a contract to replace the imported PSI-200 Particle Sizer from Finland with a domestically developed measuring head, signaling strong potential for widespread adoption.
