Hurricane reduced the earnings of U.S. chemical companies

Due to the devastating impacts of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, American Chemicals experienced a decline in sales and revenues as revealed in their recently released third-quarter financial reports. However, some industry analysts suggest that the hurricanes might actually accelerate the growth of the U.S. chemical sector in the long run.
This perspective comes from a report by Heights' Eldib Engineering and Research Company based in Berkeley, New Jersey. The report highlights that the extensive rebuilding and restoration efforts along the Gulf Coast will require massive amounts of construction materials, including significant purchases of chemicals, plastics, fibers, and elastomers. According to the study, this demand could generate between $5 billion and $10 billion in new business for the industry.
While the immediate impact on chemical companies has been negative, the extent of losses varies across firms. For instance, Cabot estimates a $5 million revenue loss due to damage from Hurricane Rita and reduced sales. Praxair reported that although direct physical damage was limited, the costs associated with plant shutdowns, restarts, and increased energy and transportation expenses led to a drop in operating income by $15 to $18 million.
Sterling Chemicals suffered a $10 million loss when a fire at its Texas City facility damaged a styrene production line during Rita's shutdown. Meanwhile, BASF's Altmira plant in Mexico had to halt operations due to a lack of raw materials, even though it wasn’t directly hit by the storm. Disruptions in the supply chain forced the company to declare force majeure for several key products, including polystyrene, ABS, and styrene-butadiene copolymers.
Despite the short-term challenges, the long-term outlook for the chemical industry remains cautiously optimistic, as reconstruction efforts are expected to drive demand and stimulate economic recovery in the region.
