Hurricane reduced the earnings of U.S. chemical companies

Due to the devastating impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, American Chemicals experienced a decline in sales and revenues as revealed in their recently released third-quarter financial reports. However, some industry analysts believe that the hurricanes could ultimately drive long-term growth in the U.S. chemical sector. This insight comes from a report by Heights' Eldib Engineering and Research, based in Berkeley, New Jersey. The study suggests that the extensive rebuilding and infrastructure restoration efforts along the Gulf Coast will require massive amounts of construction materials, including significant purchases of chemicals, plastics, fibers, and elastomers—estimated to be between $5 billion and $10 billion. While the immediate effects of the storms have been challenging for many chemical companies, the long-term demand for materials is expected to boost the industry. For example, Cabot reported a potential revenue loss of $5 million due to damage and reduced sales caused by Hurricane Rita. Praxair faced similar challenges, with operating income dropping by $15 to $18 million due to business disruptions, plant shutdowns, and rising energy and transportation costs. Sterling Chemicals suffered a $10 million loss after a fire at its Texas City facility damaged a styrene production line during Rita’s shutdown. Meanwhile, BASF’s Altamira plant in Mexico had to halt operations due to a lack of raw materials, and transportation disruptions forced the company to declare force majeure on several products, including polystyrene, ABS, and styrene-butadiene copolymers. Despite these setbacks, the overall recovery efforts are seen as a catalyst for increased demand, potentially leading to a stronger and more resilient chemical industry in the years ahead.
