Successfully developed the largest rolling mill nut in China

At present, China's largest steelmaking company, Baosteel, has successfully developed the pressing nut used in its roughing mill by China's Second Heavy Machinery Group (Sinomach). This marks a significant breakthrough in the localization of critical components for large-scale industrial equipment. According to the Science Times, Baosteel's initial rolling mill was fully imported from abroad and is among the most advanced and largest mills globally. The pressing nut plays a vital role in the mill’s pressing system. It weighs 2,340 kg, is made of a copper alloy, and consists of a screw and threaded nut. Its main function is to reduce the intense rolling force generated during high-speed rotation, which can reach up to 2,000 tons. Unlike conventional pressing nuts, this component must withstand extreme loads, requiring exceptional strength, wear resistance, heat resistance, anti-seizing properties, and optimal hardness compatibility. Moreover, the replacement process is carried out during scheduled mill shutdowns, meaning the nut must have a minimum service life of six years. Due to these stringent performance and durability requirements, there were no domestic manufacturers capable of producing such a specialized component. As a result, Baosteel had to import the pressing nuts at a high cost. Recognizing this challenge, Sinomach and Baosteel entered into a joint research initiative aimed at localizing the production of this critical part. After more than a year of extensive research, Sinomach developed a new copper alloy with excellent wear resistance and anti-seizing properties, similar to tin bronze. By employing a special casting method and advanced heat treatment processes, they successfully manufactured a pair of pressing nuts for Baosteel. These nuts met all the technical specifications set by the company, marking a major milestone in China's efforts to achieve self-reliance in key industrial components.
