Yesterday, the Chongqing Maritime Court, in collaboration with the Wuhan Maritime Court, launched a new GPS-based ship monitoring system to track vessels on the water. This innovative technology allows judges to instantly view the real-time navigation data of over 1,150 ships registered in Chongqing with just a single click.
In recent years, managing maritime cases along the Chuanjiang River has become increasingly challenging due to the vast number of shipping routes and the difficulty in tracking vessel movements. According to Pan Shaolong, president of the Chuanjiang River Basin, there are approximately 70 to 80 accidents each year. Previously, judges relied heavily on witness statements and limited evidence, which often led to disputes and unclear outcomes. Without direct access to the scene, it was hard to determine the exact circumstances of each incident.
To improve the accuracy and efficiency of case handling, the Chongqing Maritime Court partnered with the local maritime department to implement this advanced GPS monitoring system. The system combines satellite positioning, mobile communication, geographic information systems, and internet technologies, offering features such as real-time vessel tracking, navigation assistance, evidence collection, and information sharing.
Currently, more than 1,150 ships in Chongqing are equipped with GPS terminals. During a live demonstration, simply entering a ship’s name into the system immediately displayed detailed navigational data, including its route, direction, and speed. This level of precision helps ensure that all relevant information is captured accurately, reducing ambiguity in legal proceedings.
Additionally, the system is now integrated with the Yangtze River Three Gorges GPS network, enabling seamless data sharing among connected vessels. This integration not only enhances operational efficiency but also strengthens the court’s ability to handle maritime disputes with greater transparency and reliability.
