Leading technology, the world's first cryogenic pump passed the acceptance

China Aerospace News Network recently carried out the acceptance test for the high-vacuum refrigerator cryogenic pump project, specifically designed for the extravehicular spacesuit test cabin developed by the General Auxiliary and Environmental Engineering Department of the Fifth Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. During the event, experts and leaders listened attentively to the technical team's detailed report on the development of the cryopump. The acceptance committee unanimously approved the project, recognizing the significant achievements made by the technical team in overcoming major challenges. They also highly commended the performance of the cryogenic pump developed by the Ministry. Due to the stringent requirements of spacecraft environment simulation equipment, which must be clean and oil-free, large-diameter cryopumps are the optimal choice, especially for handling gases like oxygen that require a high pumping speed under high vacuum conditions. Initially, imported pumps were used, but due to embargoes imposed by the United States, Japan, and other countries, it became necessary to develop this technology independently. After receiving the task, the technical team conducted a comprehensive review and design process through absorption, summarization, comparison, innovation, and theoretical verification. They then successfully completed the development of the test system and performed repeated comparisons of various testing methods. Following the installation of the main body, joint adjustments, and performance parameter tests, the results showed excellent performance across all aspects. After being integrated into the 507 extravehicular spacesuit experimental cabin system, the cryopump operated smoothly. The performance indicators of the four "Shenzhou" brand cryogenic pumps met all the design requirements, with their performance reaching the same level as similar-sized pumps in developed countries. This breakthrough has broken the technological blockade imposed by the U.S., Japan, and other countries on China’s large pumping speed vacuum technology. For the first time, China has developed a large-diameter, high-precision cryopump performance test equipment that combines both the flow method and the flow conductance method, marking a significant step forward in domestic cryogenic pump technology.
