Leading technology, the world's first cryogenic pump passed the acceptance

China Aerospace News Network recently carried out an acceptance test for the high-vacuum refrigerator cryogenic pump project, which was developed by the General Auxiliary and Environmental Engineering Department of the Fifth Academy of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. The project is part of the extravehicular spacesuit test cabin system. Experts and senior officials listened attentively to the technical team's presentation on the development process of the cryopump and ultimately approved its acceptance. The acceptance committee highly commended the technical team for their outstanding achievements in overcoming significant challenges and praised the excellent performance of the cryopump developed by the institute. Due to the strict requirements of spacecraft environment simulation equipment—such as being oil-free and requiring clean conditions—large-diameter cryopumps are essential for achieving high pumping speeds, especially for gases like oxygen. Initially, imported pumps were used, but due to embargoes imposed by the U.S., Japan, and other countries, it became necessary to develop such technology independently. After receiving the task, the technical team conducted a comprehensive review and design process, incorporating knowledge, summarizing previous work, comparing different approaches, and innovating through theoretical verification. They successfully developed the test system and performed repeated comparisons of various testing methods. The team then proceeded with the installation of the pump body, joint adjustments, and performance testing under cryogenic conditions. The results demonstrated excellent performance across all parameters. Following the integration of the 507 extravehicular spacesuit experimental cabin system, the cryopump operated smoothly. The performance indices of the four "Shenzhou" brand cryogenic pumps met all design specifications, with their performance levels matching those of similar-sized pumps in developed countries. This breakthrough marks a significant step in breaking the technological blockade imposed by the U.S., Japan, and others on China’s large pumping speed vacuum technology. For the first time, China has developed a large-diameter, high-precision cryopump performance testing system that combines both the flow method and the conductance method, showcasing remarkable progress in domestic advanced vacuum technology.
